One of the most bright rock bands of present time Keane originated in 1997 in East Sussex, Great Britain. Originally the band was called Lotus Eaters and consisted of four young men: Tim Rice-Oxley, Tom Chaplin, Richard Hughes and Dominick Scott. Then guitar player Dominick Scott left the band. In 1999, the members of the band moved to London to conquer the world. In 2000 Keane records single Call Me What You Like and in 2001 - Wolf At The Door. The songs were good but they did not manage to attract the attention of the wide range audience and recording studios. Soon the musicians returned back home upset and depressed without any notable results. Still their work in London was not a complete failure. Simon Williams, the head of the legendary label Fierce Panda heard them play at the 12 Bar Club in London and invited Keane to release a record on this label in 2003.

Keane recorded Everybody’s Changing and the song was made Single of the Week by Radio 1. Keane signed to Island UK in late 2003 and went to a small local studio called Helioscentric to record its debut album Hopes and Fears that was released in May 2004. This collection brought the band fame and Keane had 4 tours in the United Kingdom in 2004 and 5 tours in the USA in 2005. Keane visited Mexico, Japan, and Australia, toured Europe, played festivals all over the world, and played at the London ‘Live 8’ show. Hopes & Fears won British Breakthrough Act and Best Album in 2005 and Q Magazine’s Best Album award.

In 2006 Keane recorded Under the Iron Sea, a great collection of hits such as Try Again, Atlantic and Is It Any Wonder? In 2008 new album Perfect Symmetry came out. It was a nice surprise for Keane’s fans proving the exceptional position of the band in the world of rock music. The zest of the band is that unlike the other rock-bands Keane’s leading instrument is not guitar but piano. The songs Perfect Symmetry, Better Than This and Spiralling immediately became extremely popular. Now Keane is one of the most better known and promising rock bands all over the world.

It’s perhaps inevitable that Keane’s debut album, Hopes and Fears, will draw numerous comparisons to Coldplay. Like them, Keane were discovered by indie label Fierce Panda, who released a single (“Everybody’s Changing”). And, like Coldplay, Keane also do a fine trade in catchy and heartfelt indie-pop, all bruised verses and soaring choruses. But though their sound is sure to please fans of Coldplay and Travis, the reality is that Keane manage to sound that little bit more delicate. This could be due to the band’s relatively unusual makeup: rather than guitars, the trio uses a piano.

At its best, Hopes and Fears is reminiscent of Bends-era Radiohead, and singer Tom Chaplin’s voice is closer to Thom Yorke’s falsetto than Chris Martin’s cracked whine. On tracks such as the hit single, “Somewhere Only We Know” they manage to squeeze an epic-sounding poignancy from their stripped-down sound (a lot of this is due to the album’s superb production). Across 10 tracks, all this slow-burning melancholy skates a bit close to self-indulgence, and you can’t help but wish they’d rock out a bit. But Hopes and Fears is still a remarkable and surprisingly mature debut album from a young band with a bright future.

The English music press can never let anyone be. They’re always quick to hail the next big thing, and in this case, the next big Coldplay is Keane. (Lowgold briefly held that title upon its debut release in 2001, but U.K. critics rushed to give that crown to someone else.) Keane haven’t positioned themselves to be kings of anything, though, let alone the next Coldplay. Sure, Coldplay’s biggest hit to date, “Clocks,” included only pianos, and they released the Safety EP on Fierce Panda, which is also Keane’s label, but those are the only things Keane have in common with Coldplay. Alongside their beautiful, emotive dalliance of instrumentation is one thing that’ll separate Keane from all the rest, and that’s drive. The band’s open-hearted ambition on Hopes and Fears is audible on every song. Lead vocalist Tom Chaplin’s rich vocals are as vibrant as any choir, and track such as “This Is the Last Time,” “Bend and Break,” and “Can’t Stop Now” reflect Keane’s more savory, dramatic moments. Confidence bursts throughout, and for a band that has been around seven years and has never released a studio full-length album until now, achieving nearly epic-like status is quite impressive. Keane obviously have the songs and they have a strong voice leading the front; however, Tim Rice-Oxley (piano/keyboards/bass) and Richard Hughes (drums) allow Hopes and Fears to come alive with glamour and without the sheen of slick studio production. Even slow build-up tracks like “Bedshaped” and “We Might as Well Be Strangers” are just as passionate, if not more so, than some of the bigger numbers on the album. Some might find Keane’s debut a bit stagy, or too theatrical at first, but that’s okay. Listening to “Somewhere Only We Know” alone a few times is more than enough to convince you that Keane stand next to Coldplay — challenging them rather than emulating — and it’s a respectable match at that.
