Mary was a young girl who had a good job and lot of friends, her life was perfect, without sorrows and mundane problems. But everything had changed one time, when Mary heard her friends talking about her. They said that it was inappropriate for her to wear childish clothes and she should marry someone. The world of illusions, Mary lived in, was broken and from a happy smiling girl she turned into a mature and serious woman. She even married the man who was older by 20 years, but the thought of being close with him terrified her, and she run away from him.

After that she met Dick, young and a promising (as it seemed then) farmer. It wasn’t love between them, they both understood that they just needed someone for life and it wasn’t the worst variant for both of them. Mary left her job and moved to the farm with her husband. She understood that her life would not be easy because Dick had no money even for the ceilings. So, she began to clean up the house and she did it enthusiastically.

But there was one thing Mary wasn’t prepared to – native servants in her house. She hated natives and was cruel with them, every little fault was punished and in a short time she changed dozens of servants.

In addition, the bigger farmer Charlie Slatter wanted to have his lands, which meant that he should either sell it or go bankrupt – a catch 22 situation for him. Mary, who hoped for their better life, in the end understood that all Dick’s attempts were in vain – he will never get success. She did her best to support him, but she never left a thought of going back to the town.

And one day she did it. But her previous job was occupied and she was left with nothing. Dick came for her and the daily routine came back, nothing had changed. One day, when Dick felt ill with malaria, Mary had to go to the field instead of him and while she was thinking of how she hated those ugly smelling creatures, she noticed that one of them didn’t work.
