Installing linux mint 18.1 64-bit Cinnamon Serena Acer Swift 3, 14' SF314-51-52W2 (intel Core i5-6200U, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, Windows 10)

Preface and Assumptions

We're going to be installing the above linux distribution alongside windows 10 on an Acer Swift 3. These instructions are intended to do so with regards to the driver and boot problems a lot of swift 3 users appear to be having when installing mint. These instructions assume you know how to install linux mint on a computer and that you're doing so side by side with another operating system, although they should still be mostly applicable to running mint by itself (just ignore the swap and separate partitioning bit). Please use a USB for the ISO image just to keep consistency. These instructions are not verified for other linux distros, Acer systems, or Mint versions, so keep that in mind before posting questions or expecting results under those conditions.

Installing the OS:

Press F2 at ACER splash screen to get to BIOS settings. Find Supervisor password and create a password. Then, go right in the tabs and set Secure Boot to [disabled]. Press F10 to save and exit.

Reboot computer and this time press F12 to enter boot option. Select your USB (or whatever your ISO is written to) and hit enter. This should bring you to a similar boot selection screen, allowing you to choose something along the lines of “linux mint 18.1 (compatibility mode)”. Choose this option and allow linux mint to boot and enter the cinnamon desktop.

Install linux mint like you normally would, however do not choose the “Boot alongside windows 10” (or whatever version of windows you have). Choose something else and follow the guidelines for properly partitioning your hard drive and installing the operating system. After everything is installed, you can restart your computer, following mint's instructions to unplug your USB and hit enter.

Once again, press F2 at the ACER splash screen and enter BIOS. You'll have to enter the password you set for supervisor to enter BIOS settings if you didn't clear it in one of the earlier steps. This time, go to the Secure Boot option again and set it to [Enabled]. Return to the supervisor password page you started on and scroll down to something along the lines of “Give permission to UEFI to run these files”. Hit enter on this option and you'll be taken to a page that says HDD0 along with possibly other options. Select and hit enter on HDD0 (assuming this is where you installed your OS. if you're not sure then don't worry; it probably is). Next, choose EFI and enter it, and then Ubuntu and enter that. You'll see among a few others an option named 'grubx64.efi'. Press enter on this option and give it a name; I called mine 'LinuxMint18'. Hit enter twice and then F10 to save settings.

Re-enter BIOS settings for the final time by pressing F2 at the splash screen and entering your password. Go to the Boot tab and set your newly named option (in my case LinuxMint18) as the top priority by pressing F5 or F6. Now just exit with F10 and you'll be almost done.

Script Edit:

Here's the most important step. Turn on your notebook, going into the newly created linux mint OS option and do all the updates in the terminal once your desktop loads (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade). Next, open the terminal and type: sudo nano /etc/default/grub Go to the line where it says 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quiet splash' and change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quiet splash modprobe.blacklist=dw_dmac,dw_dmac_core' On your keyboard, with the script still open, press 'Control + X', then 'Y' and 'Enter' to save and exit. Now write 'sudo update-grub' in the terminal.

Notes & TroubleShooting:

Now, you should have a stable version of mint running alongside windows without any hiccups in the desktop or hangups on boot. From what I understand (i'm no expert), The reason Linux is often rejected on this machine is because the Swift 3 has proprietary drivers installed that the Linux Kernal is unfamiliar with and therefore cannot operate properly. Therefore a lot of users experience no Wi-Fi connectivity, for example. If you're having a problem like that, by the way, I suggest reinstalling the OS following the steps above closely and making sure you don't play with the BIOS settings any further, and also checking to be sure that you installed the correct version of mint; i'm not positive that this process is consistent with a lot of other versions or different distributions, such as regular Ubuntu or mint 17.3, for example.

This guide is a “last resort” for somewhat-noobs to linux like myself who just want to make sure they have a working linux distro. Some steps might be unnecessary and I might be wrong about the “purposes”, but please keep the comments constructive/patient to help others! The Swift 3 is a nice little laptop and if you're like me you were probably pretty disappointed at its incompatibility with most linux distributions. I'll try to help with and answer any questions posted below.

****UPDATE: here's the exact iso file i used. Not sure which providers i originally found it from, so i've posted the file on google drive and made shareable: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByTrmXeeLg0PcWllYzg3OE5idDQ
